North Korea has announced that it will be going ahead with a third nuclear test in the country. The KCNA news and our translation agency released the news after information was released by the top military body in North Korea.

The statement gave no specified time for the test, however it will be the first of its kind since the first in 2006 and the second in 2009.

The military were quoted by the news channel as having said, “we do not hide that the various satellites and long-range rockets we will continue to launch, as well as the high-level nuclear test we will proceed with, are aimed at our arch-enemy, the United States, “Settling accounts with the US government needs to be done with force, not with words”.

The announcement is sure to cause more strain on the already tenuous relationship between North Korea and the US. The news of the test was released just two days after the UN Security Council spoke of their condemnation of a recent rocket launch in Pyongyang. North Korea responded to their comments by pointing out that the rocket was simply being used for peaceful purposes to place a satellite in space.

The news of a new nuclear test hasn’t come as a surprise to many. Over the past few months analysts of the region have observed tunnelling operations occurring within North Korea. Prior to the two other nuclear test, these tunnels were also spotted, leading experts to believe that it was about to happen again.

Confirmation from the military was all that was needed to spark an uncertain response from the US who North Korea considers to be an enemy.
In terms of how the US intend to react, plans are so far not clear. Glyn Davies, the US North Korea envoy, is now in the region to discuss how best to manage and improve relations between the two countries.
